Meeting Wednesday September 7th

La Leche League of Portland will meet this Wednesday, September 7th from 9:30 to 11:00am at Woodfords Congregational Church in Portland (see link for directions). The first part of the Meeting is devoted to questions followed by the monthly topic presented by one of our Leaders.

La Leche League meetings are free and open to all women interested in learning more about breastfeeding and related aspects of childcare and not just for those having difficulties! At La Leche Meetings mothers find a continuing source of information, inspiration and support. Accurate information can help you preserve your breastfeeding relationship weather you are a mom who works outside the home or one who stays at home. Pregnancy is the ideal time to begin attending meetings and all mothers and their babies are welcome.

We also have a lending library full of outstanding books on breastfeeding, childbirth, parenting, nutrition, discipline and more. Please consider becoming a LLL member. Although membership is never required to attend meetings or receive support, it is the financial contributions of our members that ensures La Leche League of Portland will be here for future generations. Annual membership costs $40 and includes the new LLLI e-newsletter, Breastfeeding Today.

The Big Latch On for World Breastfeeding Week in Portland

Join us at The Big Latch On Saturday August 6!

Come celebrate World Breastfeeding Week at Greenlight Studio with the Portland Chapter of Holistic Moms Network and set a world record for simultaneous breastfeeding!

We'll be latching on and counting mom/nursling pairs from 10:30-10:31 -- please try to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the latch on to register and be counted.

There will be a raffle for some awesome prizes, too -- and as they say, "ya gotta be in it to win it!" ;)

Admission is FREE to Greenlight for participants! If you choose to stay and play, Greenlight has offered a special rate of $5.

Meeting Cancelled (February 2nd)

Woodfords Church will be closed tomorrow, February 2nd, due to the weather. Therefore there will not be a La Leche League Meeting.

Tandem Nursing Demystified

Is It Possible to Breastfeed Both an Infant and a Toddler?

The common term (in the USA) for breastfeeding siblings concurrently is "tandem nursing." Mothers have practiced tandem nursing for centuries, and today there are still many families with nursing toddlers who do not wean when their mother becomes pregnant, or who resume breastfeeding after the birth of a new sibling.

Some mothers express concern that their toddler may be taking milk meant to nourish their baby. These mothers may take comfort in the fact that breasts are marvelous things that can adjust their production to meet the demands placed upon them--if they are asked to produce enough milk for two, they usually can! Also, most toddlers breastfeed considerably less frequently than an infant, and get most of their nutrition from other foods.

Many mothers find that children who tandem nurse are closer with each other than children who do not.

It is normal even for mothers who choose to tandem nurse to sometimes wish they weren't so tied down to two babies or to want to breastfeed only one baby at a time.

It is often the case that a baby or toddler will want to breastfeed much more often when a younger sibling is born. Many want to breastfeed every time the baby does. Many mothers suggest allowing this for a period of perhaps three weeks. After that time, try telling the older child that you prefer to be able to really pay attention to him/her while breastfeeding, and request that he/she wait until the baby is done before he/she breastfeeds. This will not eliminate the constant double-nursing, but may very well cut it down.
